Vortex (vórtice) é um termo da mecânica dos fluidos que designa um movimento rotacional em torno de um eixo, frequentemente assumindo uma forma cónica onde a energia e a matéria convergem para um centro de baixa pressão. Exemplos de vórtices naturais variam em escala, desde a magnitude de furacões e tornados até à simplicidade de um redemoinho num ralo. Este efeito de sucção, que atrai e acelera forças em direção a um ponto fulcral, serve de metáfora para a organização formal desta obra: a música estrutura-se num accelerando contínuo e progressivo, culminando numa explosão de energia orquestral no momento em que a densidade temporal atinge o seu limite crítico.

A nível micro-estrutural, pequenos motivos de meios-tons e tons inteiros são justapostos, invertidos e manipulados através de processos permutativos para gerar estruturas orgânicas, como sequências e linhas melódicas. A nível macro, a progressão temporal é rigorosamente calculada através de modulações métricas: as subdivisões irregulares (quiálteras) de um tempo tornam-se a pulsação regular do tempo seguinte. Paralelamente, surgem momentos de distorção da pulsação – uma alusão à curvatura do espaço-tempo da relatividade geral – conseguida através do uso de compassos “irracionais” ou não-diádicos, que comprimem ou expandem a perceção cronológica do ouvinte.

Apesar da complexidade do processo construtivo, o discurso musical procura ser fluido e intuitivo. Ao fundir o rigor matemático com o gesto expressivo, VORTEX convida o ouvinte a deixar-se levar pela força centrípeta da orquestra. É uma exploração da inevitabilidade do tempo e do movimento, onde a massa sonora, em constante rotação, acaba por transcender a sua própria estrutura num ato final de libertação acústica.

Vortex is a term from fluid mechanics that describes a rotational motion around an axis, often taking a conical shape where energy and matter converge toward a low-pressure center. Natural vortices range in scale from the magnitude of hurricanes and tornadoes to the simplicity of water swirling down a drain. This suction effect, which pulls and accelerates forces toward a focal point, serves as a metaphor for the formal organization of this work: the music is structured in a continuous and progressive accelerando, culminating in an orchestral explosion of energy at the moment the temporal density reaches its critical limit.

At a micro-structural level, small semitone and whole-tone motifs are juxtaposed, inverted, and manipulated through permutational processes to generate organic structures, such as sequences and melodic lines. At the macro level, the temporal progression is rigorously calculated through metric modulations: the irregular subdivisions (tuplets) of one tempo become the regular pulse of the next. Parallel to this, moments of rhythmic distortion occur—an allusion to the curvature of space-time in general relativity—achieved through the use of “irrational” or non-dyadic meters, which compress or expand the listener’s chronological perception.

Despite the complexity of the constructive process, the musical discourse seeks to be fluid and intuitive. By merging mathematical rigor with expressive gesture, VORTEX invites the listener to be drawn in by the orchestra’s centripetal force. It is an exploration of the inevitability of time and motion, where the spinning sound mass ultimately transcends its own structure in a final act of acoustic release.
